Some of our Year 5s have just competed with six other local primary schools in the Primary Maths Challenge, which was organised by Malmesbury Secondary School. The competition was open to teams of up to six pupils from Years 5 & 6. As our Year 6s were already committed to attend the Junior Good Citizens event, we were able to make up a team of four Year 5s and we then asked Somerfords Walter Powell if they would like to add any of their Year 5s to our team.
The competition consisted of four rounds: team problem solving, relay problem solving, crossword (in number format) and Fizz Buzz Pop (a numbers game based on substituting multiples of 3, 4 and 5 for the words fizz, buzz and/or pop). Every single round was extremely challenging. For the first two rounds we took the lead over the other teams; we were joint first after the third round and then again joint first after the fourth and final round. This meant we were in a tie-break situation. A nailbiting 3 minute team problem solving challenge saw our team triumph and we have returned to school with the winners’ cup!
Well done to our team consisting of Charlie M, George, Thomas, Emily and Sophie (from Somerfords Walter Powell). You worked incredibly hard throughout the day, and were fantastic ambassadors for the schools. Definitely a well deserved win. We are very proud of you!
